Glossary of terms
Key terms and abbreviations from the world of photovoltaics and energy storage.
- FVE Photovoltaic power plant
- A facility that converts solar radiation into electrical energy using photovoltaic panels.
- SVR Grid balancing services
- Ancillary services provided to the transmission system operator (ČEPS) to maintain balance between electricity production and consumption.
- kWp / MWp Kilowatt-peak / Megawatt-peak
- Unit of peak (installed) PV power under Standard Test Conditions (STC).
- STC Standard Test Conditions
- Reference conditions for PV panel performance measurement: irradiance 1000 W/m², temperature 25 °C, AM 1.5 spectrum.
- DC / AC Direct Current / Alternating Current
- PV panels produce DC; the inverter converts it to AC for grid connection.
- OTE Electricity Market Operator (Czech Republic)
- State organization managing the Czech electricity market, responsible for balancing settlement among other things.
- TDI Investor technical supervision
- Independent oversight of PV plant construction quality and progress on behalf of the investor.
- MPPT Maximum Power Point Tracker
- Electronic circuit in inverters that maximizes power extracted from PV panels based on current conditions.
- IRR Internal Rate of Return
- Financial metric of a project's investment attractiveness — the discount rate at which NPV equals zero.
- UPOS Building installation conditions adjustment
- Document governing building placement conditions — often required by building authorities for PV plant projects.
- POI Point of Interconnection
- Physical point where a PV plant connects to the distribution or transmission grid.
- LCOE Levelized Cost of Energy
- Average cost per unit of electricity produced over the entire lifetime of the installation — a key PV economics metric.
- EIA Environmental Impact Assessment
- Process of evaluating a project's environmental impact, mandatory for large PV plants above a certain capacity threshold.
- BESS Battery Energy Storage System
- System for storing electrical energy in batteries — used both for increasing PV self-consumption and for grid balancing services.
